6: Bluebird Inspires the Engineers of Tomorrow

It wasn’t all hard work down at Pendine Sands, where the Bluebird team attempted to set the UK land speed record. Phase Vision was there in strength, and as it was a weekend trial, we’d taken along a few of our younger helpers... who were absolutely thrilled to meet both Joe and Don Wales, the record-breaking drivers of Bluebird – and members of the Campbell dynasty of speed.

The kids were particularly taken with Joe Wales. Rory (far right) said “It was amazing to meet Joe – he’s 19, so he’s only three years older than me – but he’s going to set a world record. I haven’t even learnt to drive yet!” Grace and Mia had a slightly different opinion. “We expected boring old engineers – it’s great that Joe is actually a hot racing driver...”

Don Wales commented “Part of the joy of Bluebird is in our ability to inspire the engineers of tomorrow. It would be great if, amongst the kids at Pendine, there were future engineers of the calibre of Brunel, Whittle or Stephenson. Let’s hope we’ve not inspired future world record holders to challenge the Campbells!”
