While the aircraft industry is moving to interchangeable components, many aircraft were hand-built - with components lovingly crafted and fitted to the airframe. When an aircraft is damaged, building a replacement component can be time consuming - especially if the aircraft is remote from its service base, or where the original design has been lost.
Quartz scanners provide an attractive solution. They are portable, so can be taken to the aircraft. They operate well in hangar conditions, working around maintenance staging, often with limited access and oblique measurement angles. Within minutes, an accurate 3D model of the damaged component can be created.
Using this 3D model, a replacement for the damaged component can be created quickly and transported to the aircraft - returning it to service far more rapidly, and at far lower cost, than ever before.
