7 up for 3d optical metrology business Phase Vision
Thursday 15th October 2009

Phase Vision, an award-winning 3D optical metrology business, will celebrate an important milestone with their seventh birthday this month.
Phase Vision was formed in 2002 as a consultancy spinout from Loughborough University, using technology developed by the world-renowned Optical Engineering Research Group at Loughborough University’s School of Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering. In 2008, the company started development of a breakthrough fringe projection shape measurement system, which is anticipated to formally launch in early 2010.
“We’re incredibly proud of the product we’ve created,” stated Ralph Weir, CEO of Phase Vision. “Our advanced algorithms solve many of the challenges of shape measurement using fringe projection. What we are building is based on a decade of research, and finally wraps structured light measurement into a product which is both usable and accessible to the wider market”.
Fringe projection, or structured light, is a high-speed form of optical measurement, capturing millions of measurements in seconds. The technique is many times faster and more accurate than the laser scanners typically used today, and looks set to become a significant player in measurement and inspection.
The new scanners are set to launch early in 2010, after extensive beta trials throughout 2009. Many early adopters have provided invaluable feedback into the final specification. Russell Coggrave, CTO of Phase Vision explains;
“Dimensional metrology products destined for manufacturing and safety critical application must work right first time. We’ve been very lucky to receive support from so many expects across the industry, allowing us to incorporate their feedback from the beta programme into the final product.”
Ralph Weir concluded; “It’s been an incredibly exciting time, transitioning a consultancy into a products supplier that will grow to be a global player in this space. I’m particularly proud of the team, which has stayed together through a period of intense change – so this birthday really is a celebration for them!”
