Laser Trackers vs. White Light Scanners For 3D MeasurementLaser trackers cannot really be treated as competitors to white light scanners for 3D measurement, as they perform a different role. A laser tracker can implement a small number of measurements very accurately, over quite considerable distances. The white light scanner provides millions of measurements over an area of a few metres square. These are not competitors, but allies in the drive to measure large components and structures. In this environment, a laser tracker can be used to provide a "coordinates system" for the white light scanner – linking multiple scans together to form an accurate model of a larger structure. The Phase Vision Quartz fringe projection scanner is ideal for this, providing large scans using advanced white light scanning technology, which can readily be integrated using a laser tracker for guidance.
